Belgrade’s Silent Killer
This article is about air pollution in Belgrade and Serbia especially in Belgrade. The article describes how polluted the air is. The pollution originates from many sources such as coal fired heating plants, cars (particularly old cars and trucks). During winter homes in Belgrade burn a lot of brown coal which increases soot particles in the air. Recently a report from the Serbian government showed that levels of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead, sulfur dioxide, and volatile organic compounds were all above national and international guidelines. The government is considering several solutions : Reduction of city traffic by introducing a ticketing system for those who want to drive into the city center, Construction of a subway system, new parking zone which will make it even more expensive to park in the city center, improve public transport including GPS systems.
The article mentions that progress is slow and the mane obstacle is finances from the government.
